OGR-2-OGR

Description:

Need to convert a MapInfo “tab” file of county boundaries to GeoJSON or TopoJSON? Import a set of watershed boundaries into Postgres? Re-project a dataset of rivers from one system to another?

The toolkit you need for these kinds of jobs is OGR-2-OGR. It does like everything when it comes to moving spatial datasets from one form or system to another. As versatile as it is though, be warned. It’s a command line tool, so the syntax can be a bit obtuse. Documentation can be equally so.

I ended up relying on a cheatsheet prepared by an organization named BostonGIS. Use it both to help install the libraries, plus get started with sample command line setups.
